Stylus Tough6000 in Action at PMA 2009
Olympus unveiled the Stylus Tough series back in January at CES. Today, we were on the showroom floor at PMA for a "sneak peak" event and had a chance to see just how tough it really is first hand. The Olympus rep was comfortable tossing the hardware around with abandon. Watch how well the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 stands up to the impact after the jump:Watching that video makes me cringe a bit because I completely destroyed a $300 camera by dropping it in exactly the same way last Christmas. But, as you can see, the Stylus Tough 6000 doesn't even flinch - or scratch or dent.
In addition to being drop proof, the Stylus Tough 6000 is waterproof (as seen in the pic above) and freezeproof--in other words, it's a great camera for users like me. I'd go so far as to call it stupidproof.
The rest of the series looks pretty good too. You can see just how thin they are in these photos.

Considering the price tag, the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000 is pretty appealing as an all-around substitute for a compact camera. To give you an idea, here are some key features:
- 10 megapixel CCD image sensor
- 3.6x optical zoom
- Operate picture playback, shadow adjustment and flash mode by just tapping the top, sides or back of the camera - good for when you have gloves on or are underwater
- 4 colors
Check back tomorrow with more from Olympus--we'll be sure to visit the full Olympus booth for all. Maybe we'll get to see a demo of the Tough 8000, which is waterproof at further depths, crushproof and even hot magma proof. Well, not molten rock-proof, but it's still about the toughest compact we've encountered.
