There is still a market for people who want a good camera, but don’t want to spend the money associated with getting a digital SLR. This is where cameras like the Sony Cyber-shot DSC H50 fit in.
With its SLR-esque styling and advanced feature set, Sony created a camera that’s as happy taking simple point and shoot shots to more advanced manual setting shots.
• 9.1 Megapixel Super HAD CCD
• Carl Zeiss 15x Optical Zoom Lens
• 3 Inch Tilt-up Clear Photo LCD Plus Display
• Face Detection
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC H50 features a generous 9.1 megapixel Super HAD CCD image sensor. This is enough to allow you to be able to print large images without it looking grainy or out of focus. It will also allow the user to crop larger portions of an image without any image quality loss. Sony’s Super HAD allows more light to pass through to each pixel increasing the sensitivity and reducing noise at the same time. This allows the camera to perform better in low light situations without the use of a flash.
With its 15x optical zoom, there isn’t much that you won’t be able to capture with your DSC H50. This will literally make your subjects appear 15 times closer. And since it uses an optical zoom vs. digital zoom there won’t be any image quality lost. The Carl Zeiss lenses are some of the best on the market. This helps the DSC H50 achieve razor sharp images.
The 3 inch LCD display makes it easy to review your images. The display also tilts to make it more comfortable for low angle shooting. The Screen also has an anti-reflective coating which makes it easier to see even in bright light conditions.
Sony’s face detection technology will let you capture the perfect smile every time, literally. It will detect when your subject smiles and take the shot at precisely that moment. It’s even smart enough to know the difference between adults and children and you can adjust your settings accordingly.
The built in Super SteadyShot utilizes an optical image stabilizer to help compensate for shaky hands or unintentional movement of the camera. This means you will have fewer shots that appear out of focus or blurry.
The expert reviewers liked the DCS H50’s versatility. The camera felt comfortable while shooting and wasn’t very heavy either. It weighs just under a pound. The camera’s ability to capture fast moving action was also superb. The camera does have its drawbacks however. It seems to take a little too long to turn on and the lens cap falls off automatically every time the camera is powered on. Overall the camera is worthy of some attention if you are in the market.
The users liked the many features available on the DSC H50. The manual features rivaled some of those on more expensive digital SLR cameras. The 15x optical zoom is also a nice feature to have, especially for those users who take their cameras to sports such as soccer and baseball where the subject is often pretty far away. Some of the users felt that the battery life was a little short and some of the features were not easily accessible.
The Sony DSC H50 offers plenty of features for the money and takes excellent photos. If you are looking for a better camera than your typical point and shoot model but don’t want to go digital SLR, this camera is worth a look.
