The Canon EOS 50D is the follow-up to the Canon EOS 40D, while similar in esthetics and features, there are some significant upgrades. The largest of them was Canon decided to go from the 40D’s 10 megapixels to now 15 megapixels. While this camera is a significant upgrade from the 40D, the things that they upgraded don’t make it that far superior of a camera than the 40D.
Standout Features
The new creative auto setting debuting in this Canon model is a setting that most notably allows you to brighten and darken the exposure, and another option to blur or sharpen the background. While useful it didn’t come at no expense, they removed one of the custom settings slots to fit it on the mode dial.
The 15.1 megapixels is a pretty significant upgrade over the 10.1 megapixels of the previous model, the 40D. For some this will definitely be a major selling point for the upgrade, and for others, not so much.
The new Digic 4 Chip allows for some new features in the camera, including face detection in the live view mode, and Auto Lighting Optimizer and high-ISO noise reduction, and variable raw sizes of 7 and 3.8 megapixels.
Summary of Reviews
A few of the reviews that can be on the internet stated that if you are buying this camera to upgrade from the 40D, it’s not worth the money, stating that this camera doesn’t outperform it to the point to call it a substantial upgrade over the predecessor. While none of them claimed the 50D to be a bad camera by any stretch of the imagination, simply put, it’s not worth the extra money.
Summary
While the camera does perform well and have a faster and new chip technology, the Digic 4, this camera does perform well and is a solid choice for anyone looking for quality pictures. Also, the new Creative Auto setting is useful, just not sure it’s worth the expense of losing a custom setting slot.
