The FinePix Z900EXR from Fujifilm is another of our favorite compact digital cameras. It sports a 3.5-inch touchscreen, a protective lens cover and vivid picture-taking technology. Because of the touchscreen, it’s easy to scroll through your photos and configure the settings. We were impressed with the number of settings and were pleasantly surprised with the image quality. Although we wish it had a greater zoom and a longer battery life, the FinePix Z900EXR operates well enough to earn itself our TopTenREVIEWS Bronze Award.
Still Imaging Performance
One of our favorite things about this digital camera is the 3.5-inch touchscreen. Not only is it the largest screen of any compact digital camera we reviewed, but it is easy to navigate and sort through pictures with your fingertips. Although it might be a bit harder for people with larger fingers, we found that the touch screen was quick and useful. On the front of the camera is a cover that slides down, revealing the lens, when you turn it on. The FinePix Z900EXR is very sleek and compact, and it fits easily into a pocket.
One minor complaint we have with the design of this camera is the lens placement. In the upper right-hand corner (from the front view), it is quite small and does not extend out of the camera once you turn it on. If you’re behind the camera, photos might be at strange angles and you will have to hold the camera more to the left to get a centered shot.
The FinePix Z900EXR comes in a variety of colors, including red, blue, pink, black, white and silver. Aside from the awkward lens placement, we love the sleek design and bright touchscreen interface.
The FinePix Z900EXR takes incredible pictures, and the large screen only enhances how great they look. The colors are especially vivid, and while we had some problems with the zoom, the photos almost always turn out great.
Thanks to the touchscreen, it is easy to select photos to edit and configure your photo settings. While the photos do not quite look professional, they are an outstanding quality for a small digital camera. We like the shutter speed options that span 4 seconds to 1/2000 of a second. At 16 megapixels, pictures you take with the FinePix Z900EXR turn out beautiful and detailed. The camera has a 5x digital zoom as well as a 5x optical zoom. While a 5x digital zoom is often sufficient, a greater optical zoom could greatly improve the quality of faraway shots taken outdoors or at events such as concerts or graduations.
While we were quite impressed with the camera’s operation, we did have trouble with focusing. The automatic focus takes a few seconds to adjust and settle on the subject. We also noticed that if you try to zoom in or out while recording video, the camera will not focus and your video will become very blurry.
The FinePix Z900EXR is packed with features that will enhance the quality of your photos, such as red eye reduction, continuous shooting, color effects and an image stabilizer. There are also several tools you can use that help make taking photos easier. This compact digital camera not only detects faces, but also recognizes up to eight different people and can sort your pictures into individual folders that contain images of these eight people.
Fujifilm has created the perfect solution for those of us who love taking pictures of our pets. It can get frustrating when you can’t get the perfect shot because Max won’t look at the camera for more than half a second. When you turn on the Auto Dog/Cat Detection feature, the FinePix Z900EXR can recognize when the dog or cat you are photographing looks at the camera, and will automatically capture a shot. Sometimes the automatic detection does not work well for pets with spots on their eyes or dark fur.
Help & Support
The FinePix Z900EXR comes with a rechargeable battery, a must-have accessory for all digital cameras. We were also impressed with the 63MB of built-in memory. Although it will not be enough internal memory to last an entire photo shoot or vacation if you forget your own memory card, it is more than most compact digital cameras have to offer.
While this camera’s battery is rechargeable, its life is quite short. It will only take about 220 photos before it needs recharging, which may not be enough for active vacationers who like to capture as many moments as possible.
While there are a few faults with Fujifilm’s FinePix Z900EXR, there are also several features that help to make it one of the best compact digital cameras around. Our favorites include the web uploading function, human and pet face detection, and the large touchscreen. This digital camera is easy to use and perfect for parents, teenagers and amateur photographers.
